Satellite Dish and TV Aerial Installation and Repairs

If you have poor picture quality one of the quickest things you can do is to just take a quick look from the ground outside to see if your dish or aerial looks as though it may have moved out of its original alignment, also from the ground take a look to see if you can see any obvious wires that may have broken or come loose. If you can see something wrong and it is above head height, we would advice you to call a engineer as falling just a couple of feet off a ladder can cause serious or fatal injury.

If everything looks OK outside move back inside the property to the TV closest to where the cables enter the property and also as poor picture quality, at this point you will also need a satellite finder or a aerial signal strength meter, we will call this from here on in your meter, you will also need a ohmmeter or other device for measuring resistance. All three are quite cheap and can be purchased online or from a shop that supply aerials or satellite equipment, after you have read and implemented all the instructions that come with your meter, disconnect the aerial from the back of the TV and connect the cable to your meter in accordance with the instructions that came with the meter, you should at this stage already have the batteries in your meter and powered on and adjust the meter to get the strongest signal you can get.

If you get a very strong signal but still get a poor picture you may need to have your TV checked if the cable came directly from the back of the TV. But if you cannot get a strong signal at the meter then take your meter and go to the connection nearest to where the cables enter the property, probably a wall socket. When you purchased your meter you should of also got a short cable with a male aerial plug on both sides, you will need this now.

Connect one side to your meter and one side to the aerial or dish wall socket and test for a signal as above and as described in the meter instructions, if you still get no signal here then the problem is probably outside and I would advice you to call a engineer capable of working at height, but if you do get a strong signal here all you need do is keep on checking individual pieces of wire with your meter and ohmmeter until you find where the signal stops and change or repair as needed.
